THE ARNO RIVER BASIN AUTHORITY
The Arno River Basin Authority is an associated partner of WIZ project. The Arno River Basin Authority carries out planning and programming activities on land protection and water resources management in the basin of the district of the North Apennines (area which includes the main river of Tuscany, Umbria and Marche, and fewer rivers of Lazio, Liguria and Emilia Romagna).
At present, the Arno River Basin Authority is constituted by 33 technical and administrative units. The team, still increasing in number, includes experiences and knowledge in geology, hydraulic and environmental engineering, agriculture, forestry, information technologies, law and communication. 'Knowledge' is one of the main activities carried out by the Basin Authority; it includes, among others, collecting, processing, storing and broadcasting data. The importance of this activity is crucial, especially when we consider the increasingly complex environmental, economic and social phenomena that public administrations have to govern: delicate and, very often, conflicting processes. In agreement with the latest laws, data produced by the Basin Authority are available for free through the web without the need for authentication and they are accompanied by appropriate metadata that describe their features.
The Arno River Basin Authority had the important task of drawing the management plan of the district. It includes not only environmental implications but it also deals with the economic and administrative aspects of the plan. To propose strategic solutions is its main purpose: strategic solutions which are economically feasible and environmentally sustainable in the same time.
